Sturgeon Kendo was founded in the city of Saint Albert, Alberta, just north of the provincial capital of Edmonton in the summer of 2021. Sturgeon Kendo teaches the traditional Japanese martial art of Kendo: the way of the sword.
Practitioners of Kendo use bamboo swords called shinai to strike 5 main targets, and wear protective gear called bogu on which the strikes land. Kendo is safe and inclusive, and has become one of the fastest growing martial arts in the world.
Sturgeon Kendo's goal is to be a nationally competitive dojo, producing successful martial artists at the regional, provincial, national, and international levels.
While competition isn't mandatory, we encourage all of our students to compete as an essential part of their interpersonal growth as complete martial artists.
Sturgeon Kendo is a member of Alberta Kendo, the Canadian Kendo Federation, as well as the International Kendo Federation (FIK), Kendo's global governing body.
